Prepare to Plant

Prepare soil-beds for planting

  • This final preparation step should only be done when you are ready to plant or transplant, otherwise weeds will get a head-start on your plants.
    1. Did you forget to apply fertilizers? Do it now, making sure to re-level the beds afterward.
    2. Ridge WidthMake 4″-high ridges on the sides and ends of soil-beds by raking soil from the center of the beds directly under the strings. The ridges must be at least 4″-high, otherwise watering may wash them out.
    3. Pull the rake from end to end to flatten the center of the soil-bed, creating an area 10″ to 12″ wide. You will plant your seeds or seedlings along the edges of this flat area (Picture #5).
